Hornady Dehumidifier Canister Review
Like most of us, I love my firearms, so I want to do whatever I can to ensure they’re protected from rust and moisture. So whether you’re using electric dehumidifiers or a desiccant dehumidifier it’s important to understand what you’re going to need to do for setup and maintenance. If you’re looking for a more ‘set and forget’ option, you’ll want to consider some type of electric dehumidifiers. We have a great article listing the Best Gun Safe Dehumidifiers which includes both electric and non-electric solutions, so be sure to check that out.
The Hornady Canister Dehumidifier is easy to use – simply place the canister into your gun safe – the best place I find is on the top shelf of my safe – and it’ll start absorbing moisture from the air. That’s the setup done!
This dehumidifier has desiccant crystals filling the center of the canister which starts off a shade of blue and will slowly change to a pinky/purple color as it absorbs moisture.
The version that I’m using is 750grams, and it also is available in an XL model which is around 1500grams in size which is great for your larger cabinets. I have used the smaller model in a rifle safe in the past, but now it’s in an ammo cabinet. For my gun safe I use a dehumidifier rod, specifically the Golden Rod to protect my firearms. I have a review on this particular gun safe dehumidifier rod which you can find here.
For me, this 750 gram version of the Hornady dehumidifier takes around a month for the moisture absorber crystals to get to capacity, and when the color changes it’s time to recharge the moisture control crystals.
Now when you see this product mention that its a rechargeable dehumidifier it’s not referring to the idea of recharging something like a battery, but more of a ‘reset’.
To reset or recharge the crystals you need to put the canister into a oven at around 300degF for up to 4 hours or until the desiccant crystals change back to a blue color and away you go. Hornady say that we can dry and reuse the crystals an unlimited amount of times. So far I haven’t been able to reach that threshold, so we’ll just have to take their word for it.
So the main reason I look for something to remove moisture is to avoid corrosion, which to date, this has done its job.
The things I don’t like about the Hornady Canister Dehumidifier is the resetting process. To take time out to put the dehumidifier canister into the oven, keep an eye on it, and then needing to handle a hot device, and then let it sit to cool is a little time consuming and cumbersome – I’m really not a fan of that.
I have had success in using this product and recharging it without any problems, although I have seen that some people haven’t had the same experience. Mainly in the resetting process where they’ve had situations where the crystals haven’t reset back to blue. Now I can’t speak into that as I don’t know their scenario or process, but it could be something to consider if you’re looking at using this product.
I have found that the biggest benefit of the Hornady Canister Dehumidifier is that it’s very effective at reducing gun safe moisture levels. It’s also very affordable, and the canisters are easy to find and replace if necessary, although if I can recharge this an unlimited amount of times, I don’t know when or why I would have to replace it.
Overall, if you’re looking for a desiccant dehumidifier, the Hornady Canister Dehumidifier is an excellent gun safe dehumidifier and for the price it’s well worth the investment. I highly recommend it!

Bought the Hornady canister dehumidifier about a years ago to go into my new Liberty rifle safe. I usually set a reminder on my cell phone to check the dehumidifier about every three months. The desiccant is usually half and half red and blue by that time so far. A good two and a half hours at 300 degrees turns all the crystals blue again and after sitting out of the oven for about two hours I pop it back in the top of safe for another three months.
