I recently got my hands on the Ferro Concepts Slickster plate carrier, a product that’s been making waves in the gun community. The hype surrounding it intrigued me, so I decided to do a review on it. The Slickster is aptly named because it maintains a minimalist design compared to other plate carriers on the market. In recent years, there’s been a shift towards lightweight and simple gear in the firearms community, which I believe is a positive trend. However, some individuals still hold on to the notion that heavier gear is better, which I find rather unintelligent. It’s crucial not to dismiss advancements in gear simply because you’re comfortable with the old ways.

Ferro Slickster Features

The Ferro Concepts Slickster is my go-to choice for a minimalist plate carrier. When I first got my hands on it, I was impressed by its simple yet versatile design. It strikes the right balance between functionality and comfort.

The Slickster is built to last, with durable materials that can handle tough conditions. It accommodates various plate sizes, giving me the flexibility to choose the level of protection I need. The plate bag securely hold my armor plates in place, adding to my confidence in its performance.

One of my favorite features is the elastic cummerbund, which offers a snug fit without adding unnecessary bulk. It’s incredibly comfortable and ensures I can move freely without restrictions. The laser-cut panels on the front make customization a breeze, allowing me to attach accessories and chest rigs to tailor it to my specific requirements. Customization options are extensive, and I’ve added pouches, magazine carriers, and a medical kit to suit my needs. The carrier’s modularity allows me to adapt it for various applications.

Now, let’s delve into my personal review of the Ferro Concepts Slickster based on my experiences with it.

Review of the Ferro Slickster

I should mention that I’m a civilian, not a law enforcement officer or military personnel, so my perspective is based on how I use the Slickster for the range and other recreational activities. While I can offer some insights into its civilian applications, it’s essential to consider the preferences and needs of those in law enforcement or the military when using plate carriers for their specific purposes.

As someone who’s spent a fair amount of time exploring different plate carriers, the Ferro Concepts Slickster has earned its place as my second favorite option. While it may not claim the top spot, it’s a solid choice for those seeking a low-profile plate carrier that balances good build quality with durability. However, it’s not without its limitations, especially if you plan to carry a substantial amount of weight.

One of the standout features of the Slickster is its ability to provide comfort, even when loaded with plates. In my experience, it manages to maintain a surprisingly low profile, making it feel less like you’re wearing armor and more like you’re geared up for a comfortable adventure. I’ve loaded it with 4.5lb ceramic plates, and it still felt more comfortable than a standard soft armor police vest. This comfort factor can’t be overstated, especially for prolonged wear.

I share the sentiment of many who appreciate the Slickster’s affordability. It’s an excellent option for those on a budget. However, it’s crucial to be aware that to unlock its full potential, you’ll likely need to invest in a few add-ons. For instance, if you plan to attach front panels onto the carrier, the ITW Nexus GT QASM Swift Clips are essential. Additionally, unless you’re concealing it under a jacket, shoulder pads are a must-have to prevent discomfort and provide padding. While the carrier itself may come at a reasonable price, these extras can add up quickly.

Customization is where the Slickster shines. I appreciate the versatility it offers to configure the carrier to suit your specific needs. Whether it’s attaching pouches for essentials like tourniquets and first-aid kits or adding magazine pouches for quick access, the Slickster accommodates various accessories. The laser-cut panels on the front work seamlessly with the Swift Clip system, allowing for easy attachment of chest rigs.

However, it’s essential to be mindful of the weight you intend to carry. The Slickster may not be the best option if you plan to use heavy plates. The shoulder straps can be a pain point, especially if you’re pushing the weight limit. They are vertical to the plates, which means they sit very close to your neck and may not conform to the outline of your shoulders well. I’ve found that plates weighing around 3.5 lbs each are as heavy as I’d comfortably go with this carrier. Anything heavier, and you might be better off exploring other options. The carrier tends to become less comfortable with added weight, so it’s essential to strike a balance that suits your needs.

In terms of concealability, the Slickster may not be the best choice due to the presence of Velcro. It’s not the most covert option, especially if you need to stay inconspicuous.

Conclusion

The Slickster stands out for its ease of use, affordability, and comfort. It accommodates a wide range of attachments and accessories, making it a versatile option. While there are other excellent plate carriers like the Crye JPC 2.0 and Spiritus LV 119, the Slickster offers a balanced combination of quality and price. However, the choice between these carriers may come down to personal preference, as they all have their strengths. The Slickster did make our best plate carriers list as the best low-profile plate carrier.

It’s a solid choice for those seeking a low-profile plate carrier for various purposes. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of its weight limitations and the need for additional add-ons to maximize its potential. While it may not claim the top spot in my list of plate carriers, it has certainly earned its place as a dependable option for those looking for a balance between quality and price.

Ferro Slickster Pros and Cons

  • Low-profile and concealable design
  • ADAPT accessory system for customization
  • Comfortable and moisture-wicking materials
