7 Best Range Bag Choices + Buyer’s Guide
Carrying all your guns and equipment to the range might seem like a daunting task, but with the right range bag carrying your guns and gear is simple, easy, and fun.
I take you through the ins and outs of some of the best range bags on the market today and help you figure out what bag best fits your needs.
What is a Range Bag?
Range bags are specifically designed bags for carrying firearms and shooting essentials and come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.
Many range bags feature pistol or rifle compartments that securely hold your firearm during transport. Typically, the primary function of any range bag will be to house your firearm.
Secondary pockets and velcro/zippered pouches help hold other gear, such as eye, ear protection, ammo, and targets.
Types of Range Bags
There are many types of bags that are available for range carry. A few of the most common types are:
- Duffle Style Bags
- Backpack Range Bags,
- Rifle Bags
- Discreet Range Bags
Each range bag type has a different fit and function and features vary from bag to bag. So determining what you plan to carry will help you decide which type of bag you need.
Do I need a Range Bag?
While a range bag isn’t a requirement to have before you hit the range, having a range bag will help you stay organized and help you not be like more and always forget that one thing at home.
I personally love having a range bag because I can leave it loaded down with my range necessities and only have to load the guns I want to take into the bag before I’m ready to go.
Another nice thing about having a dedicated range bag is you don’t have to worry about switching things out. For example, I had a friend who used a backpack style bag for everything—travel, school, range trips, you name it. Well, some ammo got loose in the bottom of his backpack and he forgot to examine it before heading to the airport. You can probably guess what happened next. While it didn’t cause him much trouble, it still was a headache at the TSA checkpoint because of that single loose round floating around the bottom of his backpack.
He now uses a dedicated range bag, and he says he prefers a dedicated range bag over his former setup.

Lynx Defense Pistol Range Bag Review
My personal favorite is the Lynx Defense Pistol Range Bag, but its price makes it not for the faint of heart.
The Pistol Range Bag is 100% Made in the USA, which was a huge plus for me. With most of the sewn goods market being overseas these days, I wasn’t expecting to have a Made in the USA bag.
It features modular inserts that hold the guns upright in the bag and are easy to access and grab. It also has a built-in gun mat that you can roll out while you are at the range to set your gun on while you clean it or perform maintenance. I like that it provides a clean work surface in any environment.
While the size is perfect for me, it is on the smaller side of range bags (they offer a larger bag as well, we will get to that later) but don’t count this bag short. The two end pockets and main compartment add plenty of extra space in this bag for your gear.
The Lynx Defense Pistol Range Bag ranks first due to the quality of the bag and the fact it’s US Made.

Lynx Defense Concord
Following up on the Lynx Defense Pistol Bag, the Lynx Defense Concord offers the same interior configuration as the pistol bag, but with more space.
Roughly 1.5x the size of the pistol bag and with two more exterior pockets with mesh bungee pockets, this bag is perfect for you if you have lots of range gear to take.
If you take multiple parts of hearing protection, just in case your buddy forgets his target staplers and more, this might be your go-to.
They make this bag with the same high-quality materials as the pistol bag and features a 1000D Cordura shell fabric.
From my experience, Lynx Defense is putting out quality products with high-end materials and is focusing more and more on range bag organization.
I ranked the Concord second because of the size and quality of construction.

Sentry Range Bag Review
I’ve used my Sentry Bag for a couple of years now, and even did a full review on it here. So, why didn’t I give it #1 on this list?
Well, truth be told, I did get that bag free and it absolutely fit my needs. However, there are a couple of things I wish it did or had, as compared to the Lynx Defense bags listed above.
First, while it is a bit lighter, it isn’t as strong of a material as theirs. I haven’t had many problems with it so far, no tearing – however, it’s been lightly taken care of and hasn’t had to. The 600 Denier has held up though.
You’re also very limited in how you want it to look. Now, don’t get me wrong, the gray they choose is great. However, if you’re looking for different color options, you won’t get that here.
I also wish it had velcro on the side so I can put my patches on it. I know, not everybody cares, and that’s probably a little too ridiculous to bring up, but eh…it is what it is.
All around though, it has solid construction and outstanding design features. So, if you’re looking for a range bag recommendation and are willing to save money on your bag but take a step down in quality, then this can be the best range bag for your needs.

Savior Equipment Specialist Range Bag Review
Savior Equipment range bag is another excellent option for your range carry. I like a lot of Savior Equipments’ organizational features as well as their attention to detail on their products.
The specialist range bag comes with 3 cushioned pistol sleeves that have ID patches on them you can write on. They are also all individually lockable, making them more secure or meeting state legal requirements.
I also really like the number of exterior pockets the Specialist case has. A side admin pocket allows you to store small things like pens and gun oil. On the flip side, a side dump pocket makes for a great junk drawer pocket. If you’re like me, you know what I mean! The catch-all pocket. The front pocket has a nice mesh pocket and features a removable magazine panel.
All-in-all, it’s hard to beat the bang for the buck you get with the Savior Specialist series pistol bag.
We rank the Savior range bag fourth due to its price point and available organization.

5.11 Range Ready Bag Review
5.11 Tactical is one of the most well-known brands in the firearms industry. If you are new to firearms, there is no doubt you’ll soon see 5.11 everywhere you turn.
While 5.11 has mostly turned to clothing and other tactical accessories, they do still maintain a line of range and gear bags.
My personal favorite in their lineup is the 5.11 Range Ready Bag. This bag is large and on par with the size of the Lynx Defense Concord.
It has a main center area as well as a removable tote-style container. The large exterior pockets provide ample space for staple guns, targets, gun cleaning kits, and more.
We ranked the 5.11 Range ready bag here due to its ample storage pockets.

Allen Company Competitor Review
Allen is well known in the shooting space, making gun storage bags, gun cleaning kits, and more.
The Competitor bag is great for anyone packing heavy and even better for someone who carries lots of ammo. The main center compartment can hold large boxes of ammo.
The competitor case is perfect for all your other gear and, much like the 5.11 bag, the main center compartment is removable. You can use the really nice roll-up gun mat that comes with the competitor case for cleaning and having a dedicated space for your guns when not in use.
We ranked the Allen Competitor here because of its hardened exterior top and front pockets.
Allen Company Competitor Pros and Cons

Propper Tactical Range Bag Organizer Review
Propper is a well-known tactical brand like 5.11 and, while we mostly known them for their BDU style pants, they also maintain a line of range bags.
The Propper range bag is very simple and affordable. If you are on a budget but want a dedicated range bag, take a look at the Propper. It doesn’t have much in the way of pockets, but it features a large main compartment.
Like the Lynx Defense Pistol Bag, it features a cleaning mat to set your guns and tools on while at the range.
The Propper is ranked here because it’s a fantastic budget option but has limited pockets and color options.
Propper Tactical Range Bag Organizer Pros and Cons
- Good Size
- Included Cleaning Mat
- Budget Range Bag
- Limited Color Options

Best Range Bag – Buyers Guide
If you are looking for a range bag, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind while you are shopping. The worst thing you can do is shop solely on price. Now we all have a budget to stay in, so price is a consideration, but getting the most for your money is equally, if not more, important.
So here are four major things to look for when looking for the best range bag to buy.
Materials: Any good bag starts with a solid foundation and for bags, that’s the materials, specifically the outermost fabric of the bag.
One of the most common types of fabric is Cordura, and it comes in several deniers, but the two most common are 500D and 1000D. 1000D is a thicker fabric and more water and wear-resistant.
One thing to be on the lookout for is “Cordura” labeled as 650, 850, etc. This is likely not true Cordura and is also a sign of imported fabric.
Imported fabric isn’t all bad, but be careful to buy your imported range bags from quality companies such as Savior Equipment or 5.11 Tactical.
Some manufacturers will label it “Nylon” or “Polyester,” which means it won’t be true Cordura brand fabric. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a solid, well-constructed bag; there are plenty of good Nylon or Polyester fabrics that imitate Cordura and are very durable.
Just keep this in mind about materials when shopping for your newest range bag.
Zippers: Zippers are the bane of many people’s existence because of their likelihood of breaking and derail from the zipper chain.
Most zipper chains on range bags and tactical products will be plastic. However, the zipper slider will probably be metal. Don’t settle for plastic sliders as they probably won’t last. Be sure to get quality zippers, such as IDEAL brand sliders or true YKK sliders.
They will probably make imitation zippers of pot metal, and with a light twist or jerk of the zipper, they will break clean off.
So avoid plastic and pot metal zipper sliders at all costs and you’ll have yourself a new quality range bag.
Storage: How the guns are stored in the range bag is extremely important because that determines the overall protection the bag gives your firearm and how easy it is to access the firearm once you are at the range.
Some range bags have individual comparts for each gun and others don’t have any specific storage for your pistol at all.
If you are looking for maximum production, look for individual pouches or inserts that will hold your guns in its place.
Features: Features are essential, and getting the right features is the most crucial part of buying your new range bag.
If you like the idea of having a dedicated workspace on the shooting range, look for a range bag that has a dedicated mat for each firearm.
Care more about organization and pockets that carry everything individually than look for something with good admin pockets.
Final Thoughts
Overall, make sure you use your hard-earned money to get the bag that checks most of your desired or required range bag feature requirements. Odds are you have limited time to get to the range as it is, having a dedicated range bag can help you get all the gear you need to the range so you can have a safe and effective range session.
Best Range Bag – FAQs
Can a rifle bag be used as a range bag?
Yes, a rifle bag can be used as a range bag, especially if you need to carry a rifle along with your other range stuff. Many rifle bags come with additional compartments and pouches for ammunition, magazines, and other shooting essentials, making them versatile for range use.
Should I include a cleaning kit in my range bag?
Absolutely, including a cleaning kit in your range bag is a good idea. A basic cleaning kit ensures you can perform maintenance and clean your firearms after a shooting session. Look for a compact kit that fits easily in your bag without taking up too much space.
What items should you carry in a range bag?
Your range bag should include essential range stuff such as eye and ear protection, extra ammunition, targets, a first aid kit, cleaning supplies, and any tools you might need for minor adjustments or repairs. Additionally, consider carrying a notebook for tracking your performance and making notes.
What should I look for in a range bag with an adjustable shoulder strap?
When selecting a range bag with adjustable shoulder straps, make sure the strap is padded for comfort and easily adjustable to fit your body size and carrying preference. A durable and wide strap helps distribute the weight evenly, reducing strain on your shoulder during transport.
