Best 6.5 Creedmoor Muzzle Brakes – Reviews

1 Trident 6.5 Dominator Muzzle Brake : Best Tunable

Trident Tunable 6.5 Dominator Featured Image

Trident 6.5 Dominator Muzzle Brake

A 4 port muzzle brake that can be modified by the user to fine tune the brake.

Trident Tunable 6.5 Dominator Specs

  • Type Tunable
  • Material A311 Steel
  • Weight 2.35 oz
  • Length 2.375 oz

Trident Tunable 6.5 Dominator Review

Trident is backed by JCB Solutions and although you might not have heard of them, their Tunable 6.5 Dominator muzzle brake is a solid performer. This muzzle brake is great for times when you want a tunable brake to fine-tune your gun’s overall performance to the greatest degree possible. The Dominator is relatively sleek and features ports on either side and a series of set screws on its top so the shooter can adjust as needed to control muzzle rise. According to the manufacturer, the best way to do this is to have all set screws installed and then remove them, starting at the back of the device, until the shooter gets the results they want.

This isn’t a boutique tunable brake, it’s an affordably priced one that still gets the job done. The Tunable 6.5 Dominator is made from A311 steel, which is a medium carbon free machining steel known for its strength and resistance to stress and wear. It has a black nitride coating for resistance to the expected wear of use (this also serves to reduce glare). The brake measures 2 3/8 inches in length and has an outside diameter of 7/8 inches and a weight of 2.35 ounces. It can be installed with a flat wrench but it’s also not a bad idea to have armorer’s wrenches specific to muzzle brakes on hand. Having the right tools for the job is a good idea when it comes to firearms, even for seemingly simple tasks.

The Tunable 6.5 Dominator gives shooters the ability to control muzzle rise beyond the norm, so if you’re concerned with muzzle rise, check it out. Keep in mind it can be a good idea to have the set screws and the corresponding tool around in case you need to adjust something.

Trident Tunable 6.5 Dominator Pros and Cons

  • Effective to adjust and fine-tune muzzle rise reduction
  • Easy to install
  • Durable
  • Easy to lose set screws
  • Requires additional work beyond basic installation

2 Ultradyne Pegasus Tanker Compensator : Best Tanker Style

Ultradyne USA Pegasus Tanker Compensator Featured Image

Ultradyne Pegasus Tanker Compensator

A large 4 port muzzle brake that will tame the biggest of calibers.

Ultradyne Pegasus Tanker Compensator Specs

  • Type Tanker
  • Material 416 Stainless Steel
  • Weight 6.7 oz
  • Length 2.41 in

Ultradyne Pegasus Tanker Compensator Review

Tanker style muzzle brakes are great when you require heavy duty felt recoil reduction and the Ultradyne USA Pegasus Tanker Compensator is a great example of a well-made device. Ultradyne created this tanker style muzzle brake to give precision shooters a serious edge and the opportunity for better scores. The Pegasus Tanker Compensator has expanding ports made to vent escaping gas at a 90-degree angle. It’s designed to reduce felt recoil drastically and make it easier for precision shooters to stay on target, execute follow-up shots more quickly, and maintain a good sight picture. They make this muzzle brake to reduce the jolting that can take place during live fire, messing up a shooter’s sight picture and slowing them down while also hindering accuracy. With the Pegasus Tanker Compensator, those problems go away.

The Pegasus Tanker Compensator is fairly hefty at 7.5 ounces, but that’s necessary for it to perform as needed. They make this model to fit 5/8-24 TPI threaded muzzles and they do not recommend it for barrels under 12 inches in length (but we find it unlikely you have a 6.5 Creedmoor with a barrel that short). They make this device from 416 stainless steel for corrosion resistance and durability. Each brake ships with a 0.875 inch timing nut.

Installation of this brake is just as straightforward as most muzzle devices. There’s also no need to adjust set screws after the fact because this is a brake made for ideal function right out of the box. If you’re using a high-powered optic and staying on target with no need to adjust after taking a shot is what you’re looking for, the Ultradyne USA Pegasus Tanker Compensator might be exactly what you need.

Ultradyne Pegasus Tanker Compensator Pros and Cons

  • Easy to install
  • Designed to keep shooters on target
  • Reliable performance
  • Durable design
  • Adds bulk to the end of the barrel
  • Not adjustable means no way to fine-tune after installation

3 Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty : Best for Hunting

Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty Featured Image

Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty

This is a muzzle brake that has three large axisymmetric baffles featuring 5 helical ports.

Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty Specs

  • Type Hunting
  • Material 416 Stainless Steel
  • Weight 5.3 oz
  • Length 2.75 in

Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty Review

When you’re hunting, you’re a lot more likely to bump and scrape your rifle against trees or bang them on a hard-sided blind. That makes it important to have a rugged muzzle brake that’s also a superior performer—because of course you want to take a single, well-placed shot at the animal you’re hunting. The Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty is a tough, durably constructed muzzle brake that’s also made to perform. So while it’s strong enough to withstand hard use, it’s also designed to give the shooter results. This is not just a fancy thread protector.

The Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty muzzle brake features a trio of asymmetric baffles to redirect gas away from the rifle’s bore axis. Each baffle has five helical ports for that same purpose, delivering excellent felt recoil reduction while simultaneously reducing torsional force. They make baffles with progressively decreasing thickness and venting to significantly reduce bullet disturbance. This means shooters get the best possible felt recoil reduction, which translates to more comfortable live fire sessions and increased accuracy on target.

This brake measures 2.75 inches in length and has a diameter of 1.3125 inches. Diameter at barrel is 0.925 inches. Weight for this brake is 5.3 ounces, putting it at a decently moderate weight, meaning it doesn’t add excessive weight to the barrel. Precision Armament recommends the use of an M41 Spanner Wrench for installation because tools do matter even for easy to install devices. This brake does not require any shims or washers. It has a DLC (diamond like carbon) finish for resistance to wear.

Precision Armament M41 Severe Duty Pros and Cons

  • Superior felt recoil reduction
  • Reduces torsion in recoil
  • Improves accuracy
  • Higher price point

4 SilencerCo ASR Muzzle Brake : Best suppressor compatiible

  • Type Suppressor Mount
  • Material N/A
  • Weight 3.5 oz
  • Length 2.5 in

SilencerCo ASR Muzzle Brake Review

Before we get into this one, we want to point out that this particular muzzle brake is only going to function as a quick attach mount for ASR compatible suppressors. If you aren’t using a suppressor that works with an ASR mount, this muzzle brake isn’t going to work for you when it comes time to attach your suppressor. But if you do have an ASR mount compatible suppressor, check out this SilencerCo ASR Muzzle Brake.

The SilencerCo ASR Muzzle Brake is marketed as reducing both felt recoil and muzzle rise. It has a straightforward design with three ports that redirect gas to either side. SilencerCo lists it as being manufactured from premium materials and the history of the manufacturer does suggest it will be a well-made product. The ASR Muzzle Brake is precision machined for consistent performance and to enhance the shooter’s live fire experience. As mentioned above, it’s compatible with the ASR mount for suppressors—simply thread the ASR mount right over the muzzle brake for a quick mount of your suppressor. It’s made with a black finish to reduce glare and increase resistance to scrapes and wear. Brakes ship from the manufacturer with the necessary shims and rocksett for quick installation.

If you simply want a basic muzzle brake that can be left on during installation of your ASR compatible suppressor, this is the device for you. It’s not a precision brake, but it gets the job done for reduction in felt recoil. Odds are that if you’re using this muzzle brake, you’re focused on shooting suppressed as much as possible.

SilencerCo ASR Muzzle Brake Pros and Cons

  • Compatible with ASR mount for suppressors
  • Quality design
  • Felt recoil reduction
  • Only ASR mount compatible
  • Basic design not for precision

A user tunable muzzle brake with Precision Armament’s Hybrid Baffle design.

Precision Armament HyperTap Muzzle Brake Specs

  • Type Hybrid
  • Material 400 Series Stainless Steel
  • Weight 2.7 to 4.9 oz
  • Length 2.94 in

Precision Armament HyperTap Muzzle Brake Review

Want the best of both worlds? The Precision Armament HyperTap Muzzle Brake is designed to offer the ideal elements of muzzle brakes and compensators in a single device. The HyperTap features the company’s Hybrid Baffle Design and Convergent-Divergent port geometry for mitigating felt recoil and reducing muzzle rise to the greatest extent possible. In fact, according to Precision Armament, felt recoil reduction when using this muzzle device can be as great as 84 percent. It’s also worth mentioning that, while we didn’t list this as precision tuning, this device is tunable.

The HyperTap features 35 degree baffle angles and is designed to reduce gas blowback while improving accuracy. Features of the HyperTap include zero flash increase, a skeletonized crown, and a tough IonBond CrCN finish for resistance to wear. Size varies by whether the user chooses the slim or standard design. Standard measurements include a length of 2.94 inches, a diameter of 1.09 inches, and a weight between 4.1 and 4.9 ounces. Brakes have an integral timing nut, so there’s no need for shims and installation is simple. They also include a spanner wrench which is convenient.

This brake is a great option for shooters that want a do-it-all design that’s high quality and purpose driven. And if the shooter prefers a tunable model, there are pilot holes that can be drilled out for tunable gas biasing. The HyperTap is easy to install, simple to clean, and user tunable. It’s a high-end muzzle device that’s well worth the investment.

Precision Armament HyperTap Muzzle Brake Pros and Cons

  • Tunable for greater precision
  • Relatively lightweight
  • No need for shims
  • Significant recoil reduction
  • High price point
  • Pilot holes must be drilled out for tunable gas biasing

Types of 6.5 Creedmoor muzzle brakes

Yes, there’s more than one type of 6.5 Creedmoor muzzle brake. In fact, if we broaden it from muzzle brakes to muzzle devices, the list gets even longer. These are a few of the most commonly used types of muzzle brakes for the 6.5 Creedmoor:

  • Precision tunable muzzle brakes
  • Tanker-style muzzle brakes
  • Hybrid muzzle brakes
  • Suppressor mount compatible muzzle brakes

Precision tunable muzzle brakes: They design these muzzle brakes not only to perform the expected duties of a brake but also to be fine-tuned to the specific user’s needs. That means there are a series of set screws strategically placed around the muzzle brake, making it possible for the user to adjust where and how much the gas escapes around the device. This is important because it makes it possible to make a brake specifically work better with certain loads, too. Precision tunable muzzle brakes are great if you want to control felt recoil and increase precision to the greatest degree possible.

Tanker style muzzle brakes: If you’re shooting for precision or long-range hunting, a tanker style muzzle brake might be ideal for you. This type of muzzle brake traditionally features a broad, flat top and bottom with ports directing gases rearward on either side. Some models also have smaller, vertical ports to further disperse gas to mitigate felt recoil and increase accuracy on target. These brakes are pretty recognizable.

Hybrid muzzle brakes: Sometimes you’ll see muzzle devices as either a muzzle brake or a compensator because the two types have slightly different functions. Then there are flash hiders, which don’t exactly hide the flash of burning gases but do reduce its overall brightness. However, there are also hybrid muzzle brakes. They make these devices to combine the best of various muzzle devices features so they not only cut down on felt recoil and increase accuracy but reduce noise and, sometimes, flash. These hybrid devices are great if you want one device to do it all instead of selecting one from a specific niche.

Suppressor compatible muzzle brakes: If you want to run your 6.5 Creedmoor suppressed, it can simplify matters to use a brake that doubles as a quick attach suppressor mount. These tend to be manufacturer specific, so when you choose one, make sure it’s actually compatible with your suppressor (or the suppressor you hope to get).

Summary

There are a lot of muzzle brakes on the market, and that can make it seem challenging when it’s time to select one. Before choosing a muzzle brake for your 6.5 Creedmoor, first decide what is most important for the device to accomplish. Are you looking for superior felt recoil reduction? Is muzzle rise a major problem? Does it need to be tunable so you can adjust it for ideal performance? How much does the overall weight of the muzzle brake matter?

Figure out what you require and go from there. And remember, while it’s nice to get a budget-friendly part, there are times a significant investment is well worth it. Make sure your 6.5 Creedmoor has the parts needed to perform its best according to your needs and demands, and if it doesn’t, pick new parts. It might surprise you just how much the 6.5 Creedmoor muzzle brake matters. Who doesn’t want improved accuracy and more comfortable extended live fire sessions?
